Decorating a Nursery on a Budget

Recently we have been planning on decorating the nursery. In time for the new arrival to our family. I know that this may seem super early as they are not due until January however, Joe has some time off for summer. So, we decided to make the best use of this time to get it ready. Today I am going to share how we have managed to create the nursery without having to break the bank. Also, we have not found out the gender of our newest arrival and we are not planning on doing this.

Measure Space Before You Purchase

This may sound a stupid one however, making sure you have the space for the furniture you want could save you money. You do not want to get your heart set on a piece of furniture and then find out that you cannot have it because it would not fit or be practical. Of course, you would not want to have to fork out the money to then replace it before your baby is even here.

Purchase Normal Chest of Drawers

This may seem a strange one unless you are planning on changing your baby exclusively on their changing table. Some of the ones with a changing table can be in excess of £200. We know that we will usually end up changing the baby downstairs and at night we will just use the floor with a changing mat. So we have decided that we are going to purchase the IKEA Malm drawers which are around the £60 mark. Of course, this chest of drawers is going to last the new arrival a long time and no doubt they can use them way into their childhood. However, if we got a changing table, they would outgrow this a lot sooner.

Avoid Nursing Chairs if Bottle Feeding

I have been looking at chairs so that I can sit in the nursery when the baby is unsettled. I know we will actually be bottle-feeding again with this baby. This means I will not be sitting in the chair for a long period of time when they are having their bottle or unsettled. Instead of forking out £100 plus on a feeding chair which I am not going to be spending a lot of time in. We have decided to go with a chair which has arms like an armchair. We actually managed to get one on Wayfair on offer. I think it was £65 and we can re-purpose the chair once it may not be needed in the nursery. You may even be lucky to have a spare chair somewhere else in the house.

Shop Sales and Special Offers

These often happen a lot and there can be some great bargains to be had. I know in the last couple of months since we have known about our new arrival. There have been at least a couple in Mothercare alone, so it is worth keeping your eyes open. We do not actually need a cot as we have the one from Jess. So, we have not had to purchase some of the bigger furniture which they do sell.

Buy a cot which turns into a toddler bed

This is going to save you money in the long run. You are not going to have to fork out money for a toddler bed as you can just remove the sides. This is what Jess has in the past and she just manages in it at nearly. I must add she does not use it every night only if she stays over at the grandparents. As currently, that is where the cot is. We have never had to pay for a toddler bed Jess went straight into a single bed at 3.

May Avoid Babyish Sticker

I know this is so tempting to get a lot of wall stickers to make it look like a nursery. However, it is worth remembering that your baby is going to grow up. These can actually end up making your babies room look more like a nursery when you want it to be a toddler room. They can be also a pain to remove and mean you end up repainting in a couple of years' times. Maybe getting some pictures or prints may be a cheaper and easier way to decorate your little one's nursery.

You can mix and match the furniture

You may find one piece which you really like however, you do not have to purchase the whole range. This is worth keeping in mind as some of the sets can be super expensive. I know if we had to purchase a set, we would have been more likely to mix and match. One to get the price down and the other to make sure we got what we needed rather than extras.

How did you manage to keep the price of your nursery down?
